ROTARY CLUB OF SANFORD: CIVIC VOLUNTEERS WITH A MISSION

Since 1925, business and professional leaders in Sanford and Lee County have met as the Rotary Club of Sanford, one of 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries. Members are civic volunteers who conduct projects that address humanitarian needs both locally and globally, from polio eradication to illiteracy, hunger, lack of clean water, and other health issues.

Locally, with focus on youth, Sanford Rotary volunteers mentor elementary students in a character development program, treat kids to a springtime college or pro baseball game, sponsor an anti-drug speech contest at high school level, and provide two scholarships for graduating seniors.

Other projects include filling bags for an international “Stop Hunger Now” program, sponsoring a local World War II vet’s “Flight of Honor” to the WWII memorial in Washington, DC, and “ringing” for the Salvation Army each December.

With a focus on community parks, the club has ongoing interest in maintaining the O.T. Sloan Park tennis courts, and is currently involved in a project in memory of former member Don Buie at the north extension of the Kiwanis Park greenway.

Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee has addressed all Rotarians:

"Look within yourselves, to understand that all of humanity has the same dreams. Similar hopes, the same aspirations, and similar problems."   His chosen RI theme for 2011-2012: “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”

Today Rotary is a world wide Service Organization promoting goodwill and benevolence.
